The Rochester Jewish Coalition for Literacy

If you like kids and know how to read... you can be a literacy volunteer! A small investment of your time brings the greatest of rewards. See our list of participating schools and sign up below!

The Rochester Jewish Coalition for Literacy is in its 18th successful year. We invite you to join in this tremendous effort to help our city’s youth. The Coalition will train you and place you in a city school where you will work one-on-one with a student who needs help with literacy skills. Give a minimum of one hour per week and get back the most fulfilling experience of a lifetime!

In 1999, the Federation instituted the Rochester Jewish Coalition for Literacy. Today, we have 200 trained volunteers helping to instill a love of reading at 14 City Schools. We have worked one-on-one with hundreds of children in kindergarten through third grade, the most critical age in learning to read. Additionally, through Coalition book drives, we have collected and distributed over 15,750 books.

We are proud of the role we take in assisting our community's children to become readers. There are so many more children to reach – thousands are at risk.
